Julie (Neri) Young

I was a camper from 91- 94, and initiated at one of the only Jr. High initiations... I took a break from camp for a few years, and then came back during college as a counselor, dance teacher, nature teacher, archery instructor, etc.... I pretty much covered all the bases.... I graduated from Longwood College (before it was a University) and have been teaching 4th and 5th grade for the past 7 years. Now I am on the Happening committee, and my am recently married to my wonderful husband Justin, who will be helping with outtrips this summer.   continue reading »

Camp:

My first memory of Chanco is at work weekend in the late seventies when I was in my early sevens.

1981 member of champion Tug-of-War team Campsite Mary
(We beat Revelations and believe it or not they had Brian Mathieson at anchor)

1982 youngest person to climb Pamper Pole
(okay so the Ropes Course was brand new I was a staff brat)

1984 Order of Chanco
(still have all my feathers)  continue reading »

Alan Gorman (was Alan Crowe)

Hello.  When I attended Chanco I was Alan Crowe.  I followed numerous siblings to Chanco and throughly loved my camp experience.  I still wish I could go back to summers at Chanco!  My family moved numerous times when I was in middle school/high school and Chanco was always the one thing that stayed stable.  I attended my last Chanco session my sophmore year in high school.   I went to Radford for undergrad ('02) and received my master's degree from Virginia Tech ('05).  I currently live in Falls Church, VA with my husband Justin.

So....

Interviewed by Dave Davenport over the phone in 1983, and accepted onto staff as a counsellor.  Had a blast.  Did it again in 1984.  Had a blast again.  Couldn't afford to be a counsellor again in 1985, and Mr Belote got the PD slot, so came back as Business Manager.  You guessed it - had a blast again.  But then had to get a "proper" job, so never made it to Order Of Chanco...

I attended many EYC events at Chanco, and I first worked at Chanco as a counselor in 1987. In 1990, I again worked as a counselor; In 1991, I was the canoe instructor; and from 1992-1995 I worked on the ropes course, with Ken Weissner for two years, and as director for two years. Adah Rawles and I led the Grand Adventure outtrip in the summer of 1995. Does anyone remember getting trapped in the New River Gorge as night fell, with half the campers at the top of Star Trek Wall, and half 90 feet below searching for a 5.0 climb-out?  continue reading »

I am a mother and teacher in the Richmond area.  I have two adorable boys and an *adoring* husband of 13 years.  I teach middle school science and YAC at our church.  I'm always encouraging the kids to go to Chanco so it can change their lives!

Amy Donohue Brown

Hello-  I went to camp at Chanco once as a camper, but came back for 4 years as a counselor.  I now live in Minnesota with my husband (Keith Brown- former counselor and water front director at Chanco) and our two children (Simon 6 and Liam 1).  We love Minnesota but hope to visit Chanco next summer while we are VA.

What a great site!  It is wonderful to hear how everyone is doing and recollect forgoten memories...As for me, I am living in Boone, NC and working as a high school counselor.  I have three beautiful, happy, healthy daughters!  Adali (6 months), Penley (21 months) and Scout (9 years).  Scout went to first session last summer and had a BLAST!  She cried all the way home and sang to us every song she had learned!  I guess the Chanco spirit is still going strong...

Camp Chanco to me was the best time I ever had as a kid. I remember the last day of camp was always the hardest because I never wanted to leave....I couldn't wait to return the next year. My brother and I went for 7 years and we had a ball!!! I remember hanging with my brother, Ned West, Matt Sexton and Gary Smith. We were always looking for a place to SKATE!! haha!  continue reading »

How exciting to find this site! Thanks for setting this up!  It is wonderful to read how and what everyone is doing.  There are so many names here that I remember ... belonging to people I thought I would never lose touch with.  How quickly the years go by!

I don't know how many of you remember me ... or perhaps my sister, Laura. It has been ages since I have had contact to anyone from Chanco. Chanco (and EYC!) was such an important part of my life, though, and something I still think of often.  continue reading »
