Why I'm going to the Reunion this year
SO....Who's going to the Reunion? I am... Because I can't think of a better way to spend an early September weekend than with friends I know, and friends I haven't met yet....at a place that helped to make me who I am today. Chanco is in my blood, and is part of my soul. It's caused me to do things I haven't considered doing before. I've never been one for much outdoor physical labor. But scroll back to May 2009 at the work weekend; there I was applying hammer to nails (big ones--and a full size hammer, not one of those girlie ones). continue reading »
The Story of a Chanco Camper's Mail
A Camper's mail is important. So important that he or she must sing for it. At least that's the way it was when I was a camper back in the stone age. Sometimes a card or a letter sent to a camper will prove to be much more important than you might ever imagine. I want to tell the true story of a more recent camper's Chanco mail. Alumni Work Weekend a Success
A little rain dampened the woods, but not our spirits as we gathered on Friday evening to begin a weekend of work, and fun and to get that Chanco feeling once again. Three brand new, very solid and sturdy, not to mention attractive picnic tables were built and stained against the elements. continue reading »

Route 10 (or) The Spirit Led Me
I knew this road trip would have to happen eventually. I wasn't looking forward to it. After 6 years in a nursing home my mother passed away on June 16, 2007. On the 19th, I left my home in Maryland traveling south to be with my sisters and brother who all live in the same area of northeastern North Carolina where mom had been living. The memorial service wasn't until the following Saturday, the 23rd, but I felt the need to be there early, to help my sister get her house ready for alot of company and to just be there.
It felt like that day was the hottest of the summer so far. The Rt. 295 bypass around Richmond was really getting on my nerves. The exit sign for Hopewell, VA and Rt. 10 came into view. Surely this is a Sign from the Spirit, I thought. I was definitely ready to get off of that interstate. And what better road to travel than on good old Route 10? continue reading »
