Alumni Work Weekend a Success
A little rain dampened the woods, but not our spirits as we gathered on Friday evening to begin a weekend of work, and fun and to get that Chanco feeling once again. Saturday morning the sky was clear and the day brought with it a few blisters, a sore muscle or two (for me at least), and a bit of sweat. The most valuable development of the day was a feeling of accomplishment and pride at having completed the tasks we'd assigned ourselves. Three brand new, very solid and sturdy, not to mention attractive picnic tables were built and stained against the elements. The collection of fall and winter leaves that had deposited themselves in large piles around the dining hall and office were relocated to a spot were they can repose in peace, away from tramping feet. Boats on the waterfront were moved to spots were they can begin to anticipate the summer and getting wet again in the James. Benches in the amphitheater were moved back into position and leveled to accept the many posteriors of the summer with more comfort. It was with a big sense of pride and work well done when at the end of the day we made our way back to campsites and showers and dinner. An evening campfire with stories, children and laughter was enjoyed by all who were there.
Sunday morning brought more rain, unfortunately. But for me, the rain took nothing away from the beauty and peaceful feeling of my favorite place on earth. I would like to personally thank everyone who was able to participate for a great time, and for all of the work and effort you each gave. I know you could all have been somewhere else, but your choice to be at Chanco and giving back is very much appreciated. A special thanks to Chuck Alley for organizing and supervising the picnic table project; to Helen Somers and the Leaf Crew; (ask Helen about the special relationship she now has with the power leaf blower sometime); to Jenny and the waterfront work crew; to Jim S. for his helpfulness and supervision and making sure we had what we needed. To EVERYONE who was there! For killer Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, brownies, children, snails, creepy crawlies, and rain; all of this I am grateful for. I’d also like to thank those who contributed even though they were unable to be there in person. Your financial contributions made the whole thing possible. I’m already looking forward to September and the Reunion, when I can make my pilgrimage back down Rt. 95 to my Heaven on Earth, our Camp Chanco. Hope to see you ALL there!

Alumni return to the woods
Well said, Sarah!
The weekend was so much fun - and truly a gift of rejuvenation that only Chanco and the people that appreciate it can offer. There is nothing like spending a weekend in the woods remembering things from long ago, and creating new memories to keep us going... Why is it that the laughter flows more freely on Chanco's property than anywhere else?
