So here's something different. I decided to lay off the typing for this one. Click that little play icon (maybe twice), turn those speakers on, and give a listen.
And here's that link.

Rain at Chanco II
I wanted to add yes yes to conversations held with friends at Chanco in the rain...in tents...in adirondaks...on the side porch of old Taylor Hall...on the screen porch of Charlie and Carol's trailer...the rain striking the tin roof...not being able to see into the dark through the sheets of rain...
Rain At Chanco
I think it was the summer of 1975 or 1976, 2nd session, back then all sessions were 2 weeks...we always sang Johnny Appleseed...it would rain...this session it rained for a solid two weeks...we did not sing Johnny Appleseed again that whole summer...everything mildewed...I was a counselor and one night when I put my head down to sleep...we slept in tents...do not dare to touch tents when it rains...my pillow squished!!!! For the first time I was briefly homesick, but then I laughed because I was home at Chanco!!!..the sound of rain on canvas...splashing through puddles...the fragrance of fresh rain... What a creative lot Chanco staff are!! We had no tv or videos for programs...waterfront, archery, nature, canoeing (benches turned over to be canoes) lots of relay games...everything was held indoors...with some excursions through the rain for some event like a mud fight! Swimming down on the waterfront for free swim in the rain was fun! I think "Peter Prune" was the Big Day Program... Pillowcase skits, Miss Chanco,...but the kids had a great time... When I smell wet pine needles on a warm wet summer evening I am carried back to Chanco.
Greg awesome audio. You have a wonderful voice that resonates with the sound of warm Chanco memories. I wish you would tell some campfire stories...I'll close my eyes...
rain at Chanco
Hey Greg,
Loved the story...loved it. There is nothing like conversations at Chanco - and even better, conversations in the rain at Chanco. I was lucky enough to staff Jr. Sr. High this year and our "staff night" was the Sunday before the kids arrived. It POURED down rain, and I got lost in the dark of camp and the pouring rain trying to find the pavilion where the "staff" were convened. We talked for hours in that pavilion in the downpour about everything and about nothing. I won't remember all the stories - but I'll always remember the feeling of sitting there with Jenny, Ann, Cari, Tater and Rick as we shared Chanco memories and goofy stories, alternated between singing favorite Chanco songs well into the night...Thanks for sharing the memory. I'll be at the reunion and can't wait! You and the entire CCAA Board are doing a fantastic job bringing us all back together again. Thank you.
SOOOO True
You're right, Talley! That was an awesome night! I do remember the stories, though ... and a few involving you! ;-) What happens at Chanco ...
Just this past weekend we were able to recreate it at our board meeting. Hurricane Hanna scared away the rest of the groups that had reserved the conference center for the weekend, but we toughed it out in the chalets. It was awesome. I don't think I'll ever look at a parking lot or chocolate in the same way again.
Tater is right ... this camp rocks!
Love you all! Ann
that was awesome
It is amazing how just sitting there at Chanco in the midst of a storm can be profound in itself....but with Chanco friends it becomes a treasured memory.....Tater is right, this camp ROCKS!!
Cool
Great idea, Greg. Enjoyed the story. Perhaps the Board could put up the list of those of us who are going to the reunion?? Could get others "off the fence". Please, please.
Cheers,
Evan
