ANYTHING GOES DAY!!!
What Anything Goes Days do you remember??
As Staff I remember...."Okay people, lets have some ideas, no everybody cannot go to Bush Gardens, no all the staff cannot sign up for Lazy Day - it must be more than an all day rest day in your tents!!!..."
I remember leading...
Swim The James River
As if I did not get enough water time as it was! Garland, Mary Ann, Cindy et others and I lead the group over in row boats. Picnic on the Jamestown side of the river. Then some of the staff were dared to swim back with the kids in the boats! They left us!! I remember the tide going out and grabbing hold of one of the poles in the river near Chanco. Garland came back to rescue us. Man were we nuts. As a parent now I would cringe to think of my kid swimming the James...but I think of the things we did as kids and our kids miss out on now...
Day at Mizy's
Spent the day helping Mr. Mizy. (is Mizy's still there or is it a housing development now) Learning to be caretaker's of God's creation. Then a rousing game of capture the flag, picnic and ice cream, then a snooze under the trees and back to camp in time for FREE SWIM!!
Indian Raid on Jamestown
With Garland, Cathy, Tom, Brian, Cindy, Roger et others. We walked down from camp to the ferry - The Ocean City- then hiked up to Jamestown. Of course the tourists loved it. Gave a 'warhoop" as we entered, Sat on the wall inside the fort and sang camp songs of Indian nature - "i zicz zica, zumba zumba" with hand motions LOL and tried to look mean!
Cookie Cooking Day
Made and painted roll out cookies (all from scratch) for the whole camp!! In the Old Dining Hall (Talbots Hall) It was hot. Made some other cookies too! I still have the recipe.
Yep, sure do!
I was with you on the James River swim (we conquered, and survived!). That was an adventure!
Another time, took a bike trip w/ fellow counselor Alex and a bunch of great campers into Williamsburg for ice cream. I had an accident, broke my jaw. Had to spend the rest of the summer w/ my mouth wired shut. My mom sent a blender to mix food, and we pulled regular SNL skits w/ the blender.
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!
Anything goes day
I remember taking a bunch of kids on an Anything goes day trip across the river in canoes. Must have been '81 or '82. I can recall only a few details, I'm old now and memory fades. I know we didn't plan well cause we beached the canoes with no idea how to actually get to the Fort we were trying to raid at Jamestown. We wandered a bit and then finally made it the fort all made up in war paint. The poor guys at the Fort working (in white ruffled shirts)were all covered in grease paint by the time we were done 'raiding'.
Another time we took the ferry boat to the other side and jumped off the dock to swim across to Chanco. Just jumped of the dock, guessing the water should be deep enough to not break our legs. Most of the kids had to be picked out of the water half way across because we didn't figure on currents and tides being against us. I did actually make it back to the waterfront.
thinking back it's a wonder we never killed anyone
Indian Raid ---
I staffed an Indian Raid on Jamestown - we took the ferry over, had lunch, snuck around the town with Jamestown's permission, and raided doing tv-esque "Indian" whoops! As I ran around a building, ten campers in tow, I was almost impaled on a halberd held by one of the Jamestown staff. I stopped short, pushed it aside, shook my finger at him, and continued our raid. The tourists loved it!
