Alex Bergren
I attended many EYC events at Chanco, and I first worked at Chanco as a counselor in 1987. In 1990, I again worked as a counselor; In 1991, I was the canoe instructor; and from 1992-1995 I worked on the ropes course, with Ken Weissner for two years, and as director for two years. Adah Rawles and I led the Grand Adventure outtrip in the summer of 1995. Does anyone remember getting trapped in the New River Gorge as night fell, with half the campers at the top of Star Trek Wall, and half 90 feet below searching for a 5.0 climb-out?
Nowadays, I'm an assistant principal in Virginia Beach, married 5 years to the former Chrissy Cameron. We are expecting our third daughter in November just 38 months after the first one was born. I'm looking forward to my girls getting to the age where they can be campers at Chanco, which is a place where I made many of my dearest friends, and lived many of my richest experiences.
The Ultimate OutTrip
Alex,
How could I ever forget that outtrip? There were only two campers at the top of the wall. We ate HandiSnacks and SlimJims for dinner that night in the van. I have no idea what time we were "rescued."
The best was listening to you explain it to Charlie over the payphone at the campground. "But the kids are having fun!"
I have told that story so many times that I had to stop telling the story. The whole trip was a milestone in my life. Thank you.
