By laws

I feel that the membership to the CCAA should be just that, alumni of Camp Chanco. Just because you went to the property for a program doesn't make you part of the camp. To open the CCAA to people who haven't been to camp would open the door to those who don't know the camp mission. This is not to say that they are bad people, they aren't, but they haven't been through a summmer/session at camp. Seen the challenge/rewards of a session/summer at camp.

If we want to include the other folks then we need to change the focus of the group from a Camp Chanco Alumni Assoc. to a Friends of Chanco on the James and open it to everyone.

In Response to "By Laws"

I must admit that I agree with Harry. I came to CAMP Chanco via October Weekend and Happening. And so I am very grateful to those experiences for bringing me to the Camp. However, if I had stopped short of my camp experience, I don't think I would have the same fascination and affinity that I have with Chanco. If we are the Camp Chanco Alumni Association, then it should be limited to that. I don't want to be exclusive (which is why I think we are trying to include everyone) but the camp (and it's spirit) IS different than the property it resides on. If we had to move camp again - would we still include individuals who only attended youth events at Chanco on the James?

Membership Criteria

I agree that without a true summer camp experience, you can't really "get it."  And those of us who have had the experience know what "it" is.  I, too, had weekend experiences, but my true spirit of Chanco comes from the summer camp experience.

A resolution to this issue, would be to have a membership category called "associate member."  These members could attend events, receive mail, pay dues, BUT not vote.  This is a common way associations handle folks that do not have full criteria.  Associate members could also be businesses that have an interest, etc.  It is a way to keep all people connected, get more dues, but make sure those who really know the ins and outs of Chanco have decision making power.
