Camp:
My first memory of Chanco is at work weekend in the late seventies when I was in my early sevens.
1981 member of champion Tug-of-War team Campsite Mary
(We beat Revelations and believe it or not they had Brian Mathieson at anchor)
1982 youngest person to climb Pamper Pole
(okay so the Ropes Course was brand new I was a staff brat)
1984 Order of Chanco
(still have all my feathers)
1985 Tetherball Singles Champion
Retired 1987 Tetherball Career Record 153-152
1984 to present 64-time Wink'em Participant
(retiring in 2007)
1988 October Weekend Bowl
(participated in one of the greatest football games in camp history)
Post Camp:
Newlywed as of April 14th 2007
Alumnus - University of South Carolina Fighting Gamecocks
Sports Reporter/Anchor FOX Carolina WHNS TV Greenville SC
I have fond memories of that sleepy hamlet on the James and those that inhabited the place where the trees are magic and skies are blue
I lost a Tug-of-War?
Stuck in Revelations
Revelations!
Were you there when an escaped convict ran through the campsite and assaulted Kevin Gallagher? There was a very exciting search for this escapee, even had hovering helicopters over Revelations. In true Chanco style, Kevin created lyrics (to a Johnny Cash tune) to commenerate the event. Wish I still had them but it was titled "Stuck in Revelations" because in addition it was the first year of the site and it was, well, a dump.
Revelations
That episode pre dates my existence but sounds like a tale to be told. Bad thing about Revelations was that it was fringe campsite (like an Iron Curtain country) anyone that wanted to invade Camp from Scotland Wharf - had to march through Revelations. If memory serves me correct - there was some real weirdos living down by the docks.
If you are 60's camper then you must have some good Taylor Hall stories.
