Welcome to Chanco Once, the online community site for folks who once went to Camp Chanco. This website is run by the Camp Chanco Alumni Association (CCAA), and is in no way affiliated with Chanco on the James or the Epicopal Diocese of Southern Virginia. Happy motoring.

Pa-ah-mun-key!

So, I was going to write this entry last week, and had I, it would have been a sweeping dramatic piece of prose that may, or may not, have bordered on the melodramatic. It quite possibly would have flirted with melodramatic. It most certainly would have at the very least sent melodramatic an anonymous shot from across the room, even if it never found the courage to actually ask it out on a date. In any case, I decided to let some time drift under the bridge before typing, and we may never know whether or not it was the right decision.  continue reading »

THANK YOU CCAA MEMBERS

Once again the CCAA comes through for Chanco. The outtrip equipment needed to be replaced and our alumni association, in a period of TWO WEEKS, raised enough money to buy absolutely everything on their wish list, plus a container for storage. The equipment has been purchased and was delivered to camp over the last few weeks. Here is a list of what we provided: mixing bowls, multiple pots and skillets, a griddle, can openers, cheese graters, cups, bowls and plates, serving utensils, 6 new tents, and a supply of propane for the summer. continue reading »

Camp Chanco Reunion 2009

Registration for the September 11th-13th Chanco Reunion is underway. In just a few short weeks we need to let Chanco know how many alumni will be attending. If the spaces we've reserved are not full, they will open up part of the conference center to other groups, so please, please, please REGISTER NOW!!! This year we've reduced both lodging rates and meal rates to make the weekend more affordable. Conference rooms will be $80 for the weekend, a chalet will be $25 for the weekend, and you may still camp for free with your own tent. continue reading »

I am in a hurry because there is pie involved!!!

So, the reunion is fast approaching. We have moved it up a month to September 11th through the 13th. That way we can enjoy the fading summer weather. I do not have all the details, well, that is not technically true. I do have all the details, I am just too lazy and too hungry to put it all together in a cohesive post. I am going to leave that to those more organized than myself. And as I said, there is pie involved. It is waiting in the other room for me. Calling my name, if you will, like some (whipped) creamy siren perched atop a beckoning chocolate reef. continue reading »

The Story of a Chanco Camper's Mail

Send this camper to camp

A Camper's mail is important. So important that he or she must sing for it. At least that's the way it was when I was a camper back in the stone age. Sometimes a card or a letter sent to a camper will prove to be much more important than you might ever imagine. I want to tell the true story of a more recent camper's Chanco mail. So get comfortable and read on... continue reading »

Buy outtrip equipment for camp!

Dear CCAA Alums,

Financial worries like budget shortfalls and reductions in charitable giving make for difficult days in a mission like Camp Chanco. However, the CCAA has kept in close contact with camp and are pleased to report that both first and second session are near full and the other sessions are doing better than last year at this time. This is real growth, and is very good news indeed!

The Alumni Work Weekend went extremely well, and many alums were able to donate materials, time, and skills to the camp that really made a difference! continue reading »
