I started my camp experience as a staff brat at age 6. My mother was the camp nurse for one, two week, session and my brother John (then called Andy) and I each stayed a week. I'm the youngest of 5 and all of my siblings had been to camp before me, so I was destined to become a faithful Alumni. I loved my first experience with my mother and couldn't wait to become an official camper.  continue reading »

Chanco Spirit...

I just dropped off my 12 year old son for his first Camp Chanco experience at 3rd Session...a whole 2 weeks...and let me tell you, I have had an awful case of that green-eyed monster, JEALOUSY!!!!   I have repeatedly asked him if I could stow away in his footlocker for the past week.  I remember so fondly the excitement of that first day...who will I see??, who will be back this year??, what campsite will I be in???  what kind of fun stuff will I get to do???   Ohhhh the fun he will have!!!  He was even singing in the car on the way about how Mom didn't get to go as I laughed at him  continue reading »

What can I say. Chanco was one of the defining places in my life. I started as a camper at 10 and ended as a Councilor Archery instructor. But you never really leave chanco.

Sweating with strangers while being bitten by flies

As grunt week is happening right now I'm reminded of two of the work weeks from my time on staff - my first in 1984 and the camp move work week in 1989.

1984

Apparently Dave thought that the 1984 staffers were all Paul Bunyan wanna-bes because all the tasks the first year I was on staff were massive. The 15 or 20 huge pine tree sections each weighing hundreds of pounds, the tons of gravel to be spread on cardiac hill, the massive mattress swap. There was no lack of work to be done. Those tree sections were huge, the old white dodge pickup truck audibly groaned every time one of those 6 foot logs was flipped into the back. The endless bucket loads of gravel carried down step after step in an effort to create a reliable place to walk and the matresses with all the usual 6-legged and 8-legged residents. Somehow everything got done.

1989

The work week in 1989 was the most intense of the summers I was on staff. Trying to move from old camp to new camp when new camp wasn't quite ready was an experience. Loading up chalets onto a flatbed trailer and then  continue reading »

Goddess of Grace

Good grief,

Looking at the pictures of Danny, Marion, Greg, Caroline and countless othes whose names I can't connect to the correct faces is daunting and fabulous, simultaneously.  continue reading »

What a great site!  It is wonderful to hear how everyone is doing and recollect forgoten memories...As for me, I am living in Boone, NC and working as a high school counselor.  I have three beautiful, happy, healthy daughters!  Adali (6 months), Penley (21 months) and Scout (9 years).  Scout went to first session last summer and had a BLAST!  She cried all the way home and sang to us every song she had learned!  I guess the Chanco spirit is still going strong...
